1914 - 1990
Consultant Pathologist to the Colchester Group of Hospitals 1945 to 1979.
To this much loved man we owe thanks for this exhibition. The items on display are but a small part of the collection of Colchester medical history he assiduously amassed. He collated the biographical records of all Colchester medical men up to 1900 and wrote on the evolution of laboratory and surgical equipment. He was responsible for many lectures and exhibitions including the 150th anniversary of the hospital in 1970, the tricentenary of the Colchester Medical Society in 1974, and the opening of the General Hospital in 1985.
In 1984 he published The History Of The Essex County Hospital, Colchester 1820-1948.
Born in Cumberland, Dr Penfold trained in medicine at Newcastle, and worked later at the London Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary. He wrote many articles on matters medical, and was a founder-member of the Royal College of Pathologists.
He was Keeper of the Archives of the Colchester Medical Society and its President in 1967.
An urbane and jovial man of unbounded energy and interests, John Penfold collected and was an expert on Cumberland clocks,
English drinking glasses and watercolours. On his retirement a gift was inscribed: Pathologist and Gentleman Extraordinary .
