Elected to CMS 1852, President in 1860 & 1878. He carried on his fatherÆs 
practise at Witham, including his private lunatic asylum. He married but had no 
children, so they adopted Alice who then married Dr Frank C. Payne ( qv), who 
took over the ownership of the asylum.

TOPPING, Henry

Other Information: One of the founders of the CMS and the first President of the 
society. Was a subscriber to the Loyal Colchester Volunteers of July 1803 and 
gave ú10. He was also a senior fellow of Kings College Cambridge. He lies buried 
under an altar tomb on the N. side of the Holy Trinity Churchyard, together with 
is illegitimate. son Thomas Pinto RN who served at Trafalgar.

TUMNER, Thomas

Other Information: Took over the SPA : the sea water bathing establishment in 
Bath st. Wivenhoe, which had been set up by local surgeon Horace Flack qv, who 
died in 1756. He published a book in 1772 about the delights of sea bathing. He 
apprenticed: John Bayley 1757 for7 yrs forú31; William Till 1769 for7 yrs forú45

TURNBULL, Robert Cyril

Other Information: became the Superintendent of SeverallÆs Psychiatric Hosp. in 
1912, the year before it opened and was tasked with equipping and staffing of 
this extensive institution. Resigned 1938.  Elected to CMS 1928 ,President 1936.
