(Part of the address by Dr John Penfold in 1987 at the unveiling of a photo of Dr Sydney Propert at the Postgraduate Medical Centre, Essex County Hospital. ôSydney was appointed Honorary Physician at the remarkable age of 28 in 1936 to succeed the eccentric Dr. Curl. I should think his colleagues were pleased to welcome him. On the coming of the NHS, Sydney became Consultant Physician but he carried on his work just as before until his retirement in 1974, a period of some 38 years. He was an absolutely sound Physician of the old school with a shrewd clinical sense. We all make mistakes but he didnÆt make many at all. I know as I was the pathologist, a wonderful position to assess your clinical colleagues û and very often to keep your mouth shut. I tried in my early days to do one weekly round with a clinician: RonnieReid, Tom Ogilvy and of course Sydney. Sir Maurice Cassidy was occasionally with Sydney, but whether he was there or not it was always a pleasure to be in such a stimulating clinical atmosphere where the diagnosis was thoroughly and coolly considered and where the patients were properly treated both medically and as human beings. Sydney was always courteous and tolerant and his patients and staff loved him dearly. I happen to have been resident in three teaching hospitals and worked in others and I would note Sydney among the best Physicians I have known. Now I would like to talk a little about him as a man and a friend û he was always loyal and trustworthy. He was a very private person, reticent about matters that concerned him deeply and personally. He did not as the saying goes ôwear his heart on his sleeveö in spite of some severe sorrows but if you had the honour of being admitted to the inner circle of his mind, one found a man of tremendous courage; one found a high degree of intelligence and creativity in the beautiful stories and poems he wrote and naturally with them a sensitivity that could be hurt. Fortunately, there was present also a wonderful sense of humour. We all remember him as a fine raconteur and speaker with his marvellous twisted grin and manner of speech that was so endearing and will be a lasting memory. We can only guess at how fortunate he was in the love, devotion and understanding of his wife Peggy.ö) PROSSER Evan Thomas Born: Died: û assumed around 1899 Practice: Pharmaceutical Chemist/Druggist 7 Head st, Colchester 1863-1899 (KD) Education: Other Information: His house at 7 Head St was later owned by the Seaman family, several generations of apothecaries, and afterwards by William Smith wine merchantû six times Mayor of Colchester PUGH Benjamin Born: Died: Practice: Writer/ Surgeon in Chelmsford Education: Other Information: Wrote books: Treatise on Midwifery 1754; Observations on climates of Naples, Rome, Nice etc.1784; A treatise on the Mineral waters ofBelarus.
