1869; he was a great naturalist and botanist: he raised the first white 
pelargonium and improved marrow- fat peas by dwarfing it from 6 or 7 feet high 
to 15 inches and Mclean early rhubarb; skilled taxidermist. After his death he 
received recognition for his accomplishments as a naturalist and horticulturist by 
several journalists including Dr. Laver who wrote, "there was nothing he touched 
which he did not excel in"; he was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. 
The Nature reserve at High Woods is named after him;he was the son of Sir 
L.Mclean (qv)

practiced for many years at Boxford for a long time in partnership with Mr. 
Gurdon. He had three daughters, I donÆt think either of them ever married. He 
was a pleasant and kind man, a frequent attendant at the CMSÆs meetings, 
where as elsewhere, he was very popularö (P.Laver).

MAYBURY William Augustus

Practice: Newark in Nottinghamshire where he spent a year as the resident 
Medical Officer and Hospital Secretary. In 1876 he came to Colchester and 
started in general medical practice at 9 West Stockwell St, where he was based 
until his death 50 years, he was the surgeon of the Colchester Police Force, the 
MO for the 1st and 2nd districts of the Colchester Union, and the Medical 
referee for the Essex Provident Society.
Education: Trained at St ThomasÆs Hospita, House Surgeon MRCS1870. Gained 
MD and MChir from QueenÆs University Belfast.
Other information: Elected CMSoc 1883, President from 1910 to 1913. A brass 
memorial plaque, erected in his honour by his family in Castle Park, was stolen in 
2012 replaced in stone in 2013.

It was often frequent in of that district but in 1828 it became almost a 
pestilence, there being very many deaths from this disease in that parish aloneö.

several years house surgeon to the hospital. At the time of his election, party or 
rather church disputes ran very high. His principle opponent was Dr. John 
Grabham, a man infinitely in every way his superior, but Dr. GrabhamÆs claim 
was pressed by some who were High churchman, and therefore this Low-church 
party, who at this time were very violent, joined with the Nonconformist and 
kept Grabham out, and elected Mercer, a most disagreeable man in my

ôBuried in the south side of church in Dedham, where his tombstone says he was 
16 years surgeon for the parish. He died aged 48. He was gentlemanly 
mannered man, and I always found him pleasant in all communications I had 
with him. He was quite the old style in dress with white stock etc. In the case of 
an attempt at murder of a young woman he ridiculed the idea of the wound 
having been caused by a pistol shot, he was quite certain and his colleagues too, 
but the shot was found at the P.M. I mention this to show the amount of his 
knowledge which was all on parö (P. Laver)

Mankind, particularly the Common Peopleö. (This work reached its 17th edition 
in 1777, and the  32nd by 1800). His death: ôa benevolent person at an 
advanced age,ö was reported Jan 18 1777 with a valedictory poem included. 
ôVervain and Hemlock were his recipe; and all his cures performed without a 
fee.ö

Colchester Med Soc in1845.  Secretary to Colchester Botanic Garden Comm. 
Councillor for 3d Wardin1846.        ôIn 6/6/1843 Mr. James Farreu informed me 
that several of his members of the Lion Walk Chapel have separated themselves 
from that Church and have hired this large room opposite and propose to 
having a preacher that will expand their doctrines will circumstances permit 
them to erect a more convenient place. The leading men among them is Mr. D. 
Morris and R. M. Savill: the latter attended the Wesleyan chapel for some time. 
This is another specimen of the evil arising from the DissentersÆ plan of electing 
their own minister but doubtless it would work if they were imbued with their 
Christian doctrine of loving their neighbours as themselves. û (William Wire,

Other information: Son of David Morris q.v. ôhe was  for some years (1856-70) 
honorary secretary of the CMSoc in succession to his uncle Samuel Adolph 
Philbrick. A very cantankerous and evil disposed person was connected with the 
election petition of 1867 ,and is there represented as an ugly, pig headed 
person. During the later years of his life, he was active in spreading all the 
scandal that was rife in Colchester and in most cases he was the author. If you 
met him in the street and some respectable person (man or woman) passed he 
would at once begin to tell you something bad of them. He certainly was the 
worst man I knew in this respect. So bad was he that I threatened to kick him if 
he ever dared to speak to me again. Every year he was worse and worse and he 
always said he could see a little man looking over his shoulder. He was seized 
with apoplexy when seeing a patient in Culver St, (and I am glad to say he never 
spoke again), he was carried home and died. He was the most hateful person I 
ever knewö (P.Laver).

He bought the family estates (Topping Hall) from his elder brother, Samuel a 
lawyer, who had succeeded his father. He was secretary to the Royal Society.

Other Information: He was elected member of Suffolk Benevolent Medical 
Society in 1833 and became Vice-president in 1836 until 1844. In September 
1859, he was presented with a silver inkstand and his wife presented with a silver 
teapot because he was leaving his hometown after 33 years of practice.

MUSGRAVE John

Other Information: Son of John Musgrave of South Halstead.  Ipswich Journal 
announcements:ö On 15.9.1753 announced that after the death of his father 
that he had moved to Colchester near KingÆs Head Inn within Headgate: where I 
now practise Surgery, and carry on the Business of an Apothecary. ( In 1762 that 
house was only rated 4, so it was not a flourishing large house then). On 
20.10.1764 he advertised ôAn Infallible Cure for the Ague, thoÆ of ever so long 
standing, at his shop in Head Street, Colchester, at 5s. a pot, taken by mouth 
and very pleasantö. On March 14 he advertised from his house at Mile End, but 
letters to be addressed to him in Head St. On 2.6.1770 he does inoculation at his 
house in Mile End: terms 3 gns, Servants 2gns. He also inoculates at the pubs in 
Ford St, Bures , Nayland. On 25.9.1773 he says that he had inoculated 3000 
persons at Mile End with no deaths and without mercury.ö On 8.10.1778. his 
widow, Mary Musgrave of St Michael Mile End, married a carpenter, John 
Mannall of Colchester. On 2.1.1779 Mr John Wade, surgeon, ôadvertised, that he 
had taken over Mr MusgraveÆs Inoculation-house and would continue his 
practiceö
